Tissue Expander Reconstruction

What is tissue expander breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction using a tissue expander can occur with the placement of a tissue expander either during the mastectomy procedure or at a later date. The tissue expander is a contraption that creates space underneath the breast skin for the patient’s final mode of reconstruction, whether it be flap or implant. The tissue expander is normally in place for 2-3 months before it is replaced with the final reconstruction. During the 2 months, the expander will be made larger by injecting into the expander. This reconstruction method requires at least two surgeries.

When is an expander implant reconstruction recommended?

This two-step approach to breast reconstruction can be used either when there is not enough skin to insert the final reconstruction or the skin is not healthy enough to tolerate an implant at the time of mastectomy.

The end result can be a confident and self-assured woman who can make clothing choices without having to hide imperfections in her breasts.
