Neurotoxins
Botulinum neurotoxin or BNT is a naturally occurring biological product derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This neurotoxin offers dystonia a muscular relaxer effect that reduces muscle contractions. BNT acts by blocking the release of chemicals that activate muscle contractions.
What are the different types of BNT?
- Botox® (Type A – onabotulinumtoxinA) – this is probably the most recognizable injectable BNT brand. This brand is also used in cosmetic procedures but using different doses as appropriate for each purpose.
- Myobloc® (Type B – rimabotulinumtoxinB), Dysport™ (Type A – abobotulinumtoxinA), and Xeomin® (Type A – incobotulinumtoxinA) are the other three brands approved by the FDA in the US.
BNT injection therapy typically requires that patients repeat the treatment every 3-4 months. Adjustments to the dose and localization can be made during the process.
