Nipple Areolar Reconstruction

What is a Nipple-areolar Reconstruction?

Patients who are not able to have a nipple-sparing mastectomy will typically seek a nipple reconstruction to achieve a natural appearance of the breasts. The nipple reconstruction is typically the last step of the breast reconstruction process once a flap and/or implant has been inserted. This surgery can be done as an outpatient procedure and will typically take place 3-4 months after the new breast was formed and has had time to heal.

When is a nipple reconstruction recommended?

A nipple reconstruction is recommended for patients whose nipples were removed during a mastectomy and wish to get them back as a part of their breast reconstruction process.

An ideal candidate for a nipple reconstruction surgery is a relatively healthy patient with enough tissue to form a projected nipple. Ideal candidates will also have completed the mound portion of the breast reconstruction 3-4 months before this surgery.

The doctor will try to match your healthy breast’s nipple if only one breast was affected or may recommend the surgery for both nipples to create a more similar look.

What are the types of nipple reconstruction?

One or more techniques may be used to reconstruct your nipples. The most popular technique involves surgically folding the skin to create the projected shape of the nipple. Another option is to forgo surgery to create a projection and instead use a 3D tattooing technique to create the illusion of projection and to add realistic nipple coloring.
