This is an outpatient surgical procedure to enhance the labia and it is considered to be a part of vaginal rejuvenation, reconstructive, and gender confirmation techniques. The labia minora (inner labia) and/or the labia majora (outer labia) are either re-shaped or created during this procedure.
Labiaplasty is a very personal procedure and the motivations for having it done are different for every woman. Some women are born with a misshapen labia or no tissue in this area at all. Some women want to restore their labia to a time before childbirth or aging. Other women feel that their labia are too large and show through tight clothing or bathing suits. Excess labia can also twist around and cause irritation and pain. Labiaplasty is also done as part of gender-confirmation surgery to achieve a natural feminine genital look.
When is a labiaplasty recommended?
A labiaplasty is recommended for women who do not feel confident with the appearance of their labia for whatever reason. Whatever the reason, if you are unhappy with the look or function of your minor or major labia, a labiaplasty can be right for you.

What are the different types of labiaplasty?
There are many variations of the labiaplasty to address the concerns of each patient. Some of the most popular techniques are listed below.
Trim procedure
This is the original labiaplasty technique and the most widely performed by surgeons. This procedure consists of removing the excess part of the labia minora, then suturing it so that it becomes symmetrical to the labia majora.
Wedge procedure
This procedure also addresses the labia minora and consists of removing a partial thickness wedge from the thickest part of the labia. The submucosa is left intact by removing only a partial thickness. This technique achieves a natural look in the vagina by preserving the wrinkled edges.
There are other techniques for reducing and reshaping the labia minora and majora and all of these techniques have pros and cons. Talk to your doctor about the areas of your labia that you want to address and he will recommend the technique that is right for you.
Who is a good candidate for a labiaplasty?
Any patient who wants to enhance the appearance of their labia and is in generally good health is eligible for the procedure. The procedure is typically reserved for adults but may be performed on minors under extenuating circumstances.
