Mole removal is the surgical procedure used by a doctor to remove a mole from your face or body. There are two main techniques: surgical excision and a surgical shave. Both techniques require the doctor to numb the area of your mole first. With the surgical excision, the doctor cuts out the whole mole and then closes the wound using stitches or sutures. The other method is the surgical shaves where the doctor uses a blade to shave off the mole, there is no need for stitches or sutures using this method.
With either technique, the doctor will usually send the mole for skin cancer testing just to be safe.
When is mole removal recommended?
You should remove a mole if its appearance bothers you, it gets irritated by rubbing against your clothes, or if it has changed in color, size, or shape. A mole that shows differences over time in color, size, or shape can be a warning sign of skin cancer.
What are the benefits of mole removal?
Removing a mole will give you the cosmetic benefit of removing an eye-sore from your face or body. But more importantly, removing a mole will allow the doctor to test it for skin cancer and make sure that you do not have a serious underlying issue.
