Oncoplastic reconstruction is a collection of procedures that serve to restore one or more breasts to the most normal shape, appearance, symmetry, and size possible following partial mastectomy or lumpectomy procedure.
Oncoplastic reconstruction often involves more than one procedure, these procedures can be performed in stages depending on the recommendation of your doctor. The oncoplastic reconstruction can begin at the time of the lumpectomy procedure or a later date depending on the patient’s wishes and needs.
You are our number one priority and your comfort is very important to us. At the National Center for Plastic surgery, you can expect an environment of healing, empathy, and respect during the entire process of your partial mastectomy reconstruction starting with your consultation, during your procedure, and through your recovery.
When is a oncoplastic reconstruction recommended?
It is recommended for women who lost the natural appearance of one or more of their breasts due to a lumpectomy procedure. Prosthetics can be worn to simulate natural breasts under clothing, but this is not enough for some women who want to feel confident with their breasts while wearing lingerie or bathing suits. In this case, partial mastectomy reconstruction is recommended.
Patients need to have realistic expectations of what the procedure will accomplish, the surgeons will work to get the best most-natural looking result that meets the patient’s goals. However, we ask patients to keep in mind that they are limited by the elasticity of the skin, the condition of the existing tissue, and the amount of tissue they have to work with.
How is reconstruction different after a full mastectomy versus a lumpectomy/partial mastectomy?
Women who undergo a lumpectomy have more tissue to work with, the areolas and nipples are typically left intact, and therefore eligible for less invasive procedures with wonderful restorative results. Implants can be smaller, fat transfers can often achieve the desired size, and if the tissue flap technique is used then the transferred flaps are smaller.
Who is a good candidate for an oncoplastic reconstruction?
Women who have had a partial mastectomy or lumpectomy are eligible for this procedure. Ideal candidates can cope well with their diagnosis and treatment, do not have additional medical conditions or other illnesses that may impair healing, and have a positive outlook and realistic goals for restoring their breasts and self-confidence.
